First solo exhibition hosted by the Blinking Light Gallery in Plainfield, Vermont
My current work consists of oil paintings, charcoal, pastel, and graphite drawings, capturing the lapse of time from late summer into early winter, encompassing both the first and second harvests, where plants come into fruition and decay shortly after. The explored landscape, with a focus on the apple trees and uncut fields throughout a homestead farm in Worcester, Vermont, combines plein air, symbolism of cycles of life and death, waning light, waxing darkness, and surrealistic content that threads together living organisms and human consciousness. My process involves building up consecutive layers of wet on wet paint, scraping to build up texture and create tactile edges while also wiping down the paint and blending to create atmosphere. The contrast produces an interesting tension between soft and rough, tone and saturation. The pieces have a physical presence; they channel the direct influences of forces in nature as well as hold the energy of intuitive additive and reductive mark making.
